I wrote Maddie’s Tails after my six-year-old granddaughter told her parents that her soccer uniform wasn’t “her,” so she didn’t like wearing it. Her comment left me wondering how kids define themselves and how it impacts what they think is or should be their life’s purpose.
I wondered what messages we were sending to kids. Are we helping them respect differences, including their own? Are we taking the time to talk and really listen to them? Can we do a better job communicating with them about this?
With the help of my dog, Maddie, a Spinone Italiano, I decided to tackle these questions in our new book series, Maddie’s Tails! Thanks to my granddaughter, Bailey, and my messenger, Maddie, Maddie’s Tails was written for everyone who has struggled to fit in.
